Cat eye nails have taken over Pinterest, and for good reason. The magnetic shimmer creates a glowing band of light that looks like velvet or a gemstone. In a dusty rose shade with burgundy butterfly accents, it's romantic, rich and totally unique.

What is cat eye polish?

Cat eye polish contains tiny magnetic particles. When you hold a magnet over the wet polish, the particles gather into a line or glow, creating that signature "cat's eye" shine. Most cat eye polishes are gels, but regular-polish versions exist too.

How to do rose cat eye nails

  1. Prep and base: shape nails into almond, apply a base and cure.
  2. Optional dark base: a coat of black or deep red under cat eye makes the shimmer more dramatic.
  3. Cat eye layer: apply one coat of rose cat eye gel.
  4. Use the magnet: hold it close to the nail (without touching) for 5–10 seconds. Move it to the center for a stripe, or hold it at the side for a soft glow.
  5. Cure immediately, then repeat for a second coat if needed.
  6. Top coat for shine.

Add the butterfly accents

On one or two sheer nude nails, paint or apply burgundy butterfly decals, then add a tiny gem in the center of each. The nude nails give the eye a resting place between the shimmery ones.

Tips for the best shimmer

  • Work one nail at a time. The particles move until cured.
  • Thin coats give a sharper, brighter effect.
  • Experiment with magnet angles. Each angle creates a different look.
